Last night I went to see one of my favorite bands playing at a bar about an hour or so up the road in Missouri. I don't like to go to Missouri very often (Missouri and missery sound too much alike to be any good in my opinion), but for Cutthroat Shamrock I'm very willing to make the trip. They're a band from Knoxville, Tennessee that are a cross...
Weird History from the Silk Road
Yesterday after work I got tattooed! It's actually my second tat. I wanted 2 so that I'd be even. I have a thing for symmetry, so I couldn't have just one tat. Here's a pic of my new tat
It's an old Icelandic symbol called the Signpost. It's supposed to keep you from getting lost. The first tat is also an old Germanic symbol...

I got a brand new silk veil in the other day. It's its lovely original white color (the natural color of cultivated silk). I'm going to dye it this weekend, but before I do I'm enjoying its natural color and texture. I suppose I should've began this whole series of blogs by explaining how silk cultivation got started to begin with.

I've been on my frantic costuming phase for over a week now. I've finished one awesome costume and have started on another. I'll have to get together with someone to take pics of my newest creations pretty soon. My buddy Wulfgar, who was stationed in Turkey for 7 years and is finishing his degree in International Relations with a strong focus on...
I think I have a strange way of dealing with emotional trauma: I get really creative. For instance I was stationed in Germany when the 9/11 attacks took place. I cried for a while, watched way too much of the news, and I made a really cool dress. Last week I had my heart ripped out by someone I really cared about... again. I spent a day crying and my good...
I don't know which song those lyrics came from, but they're in my head since I'm all excited and hyper, just having come home from a belly dance workshop this morning. I love dancing! I love the costumes, the music, and the creative inspiration that goes into every aspect of belly dancing. The thing I think I love most, however, is the...
I had to call in sick today. I was really ill last night and couldn't face getting up at 5am to get ready for work. After I slept in a bit this morning and started feeling better. I decided to make myself some yummy crepes for breakfast, so I got out my German cookbook and started cooking. As I was cooking and eating my lovely crepes with homemade...
When I was in grad school I honestly thought that there would be employers lining up to fight for the honor of hiring me. Unfortunately I was sadly mistaken. It took about 7 months for me to find a job. During those tough months of true poverty I was reduced to selling some of my most prized possessions: my books. There were lots of my college books I was...
If you're half the geek that I am, I'm sure you've seen "Highlander" at least once. The kurgan that I'm referring to, however, isn't a 6'6" immortal with an S&M fetish. What I'm writing about are burial mounds. Far to the east, in an area known as Pazyryk (near where modern day China, Russia, Mongolia, and...
Back when I lived in Germany, I got into doing Medieval re-creation (or recreation, both terms apply). The group I was part of had pretty lax requirements when it came to choosing where and when you wanted to pretend to be from. After camping for a week in a corset I decided I wanted to be from an earlier time period, so I started researching the Vikings....
