I am an organised person. I am a Virgo, a list maker and an 'on top of everything' person. I have store cupboards and a depot, I never run out of anything or forget birthdays.
With this in mind I am left to wonder how come midday on Sunday 6 September I suddenly realised my five years would be up on the 8th and I needed to do someting quickly.
This 'something quickly' resulted in a dash into town and the purchase of a ferry ticket for a 'git, gel' to Midellini (Lesbos) that same evening.
Come the early evening I made my way to passport control having purchased a bottle of water and a bag of crisps for the two hours there and two hours back.
Obviously not paying attention or looking where I was going I stepped off a pavement (12 inches high at least), and found myself suddenly in excruciating pain in a crumpled heap, crisps, water, book and cardigan scattered in every direction.
Several kindly folk rushed to my aid but I don't know if you have ever had a similar experience, for I found I wanted no one to help because I couldn't move
.
Once my equilibrium was restored I managed to somehow shuffle on to the pavement and the shock set in. It was a heavy fall.
I drank water and felt extremely nauseous. I continued to sit.
Suddenly I remembered the ferry and despite advice to go to the hospital I wanted to get the trip out of the way and a trip to A & E, or equivalent would result in several days fine for no visa. I am an organised person remember.
The crew were fantastic and I had pillows to prop up my legs and ice packs to reduce the swelling which by now was enourmous. A kindly lady, from Holland, also on a visa run dedicated herself and her time to caring for me throughout the entire journey.
Once at the Lesbos port (don't know name) the Captain informed us we had ten minutes as the weather was changing and we needed to get back a.s.a.p.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have my visa, one sprained ankle and one fractured, muscle damage and a broken toe.
I am a hero... not.
