The Broken (or Turncated) Minaret Mosque is unique in that it has served as a Roman Temple, a Church, and an Mosque. It still bears traces of its three roles in the building materials used to build or restore it over the centuries. Originally built as a Roman temple in the 2nd century, it was destroyed in the 6th century when a large church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in its place. During the 7th century Arab invasion, the building suffered severe damage. It was repaired in the 9th century.

During the Seljuk period in the 13th century, it was converted to a mosque, and has served as a mosque since that time. A fire in 1851 damaged the minaret, which toppled the upper portion, giving the minaret it's name: "the truncated minaret."
